Superman: Happy Father's Day!
Lookin’ back, all I can say about all the things he did for me is I hope I’m at least half the Dad that he didn’t have to be.
Brad Paisley
Anyone can be a Dad, but not many Dad’s go the extra mile for their children, young or old. I remember the days of my husband rushing to the ball fields, changing clothes in the bathroom like Superman in a telephone booth, to help coach his boy’s baseball team. He was living his best life watching his son play 2nd base and coaching him with his batting practice. I cheered my heart out for my boys and was shooshed on a regular basis for being too loud or running out to "assist" if anyone got hurt. I used to be a cheerleader - so I could be loud AND PROUD.
Barry never missed a game and loved every second of it! Then the time came where he would rush from baseball field, across town to a softball field to watch his girl play her games. She was a catcher, a lefty, and fast, so she was a force to be reckoned with. She was made to be an athlete, unlike her Mom. Her Dad would beam with pride! A quick change in the car with a shirt and hat and my husband was ready to coach from the stand.
We raised all 3 kids on sports! Last but not least, the oldest, the one who chose her Mama’s “sport” - the cheerleader! Barry found his groove, just like on the field. He was at every game and he knew every cheer. The father he is makes me so proud! He watched every the half time performance that he had watched her practice every day, music blasting in the house, with a smile on his face! It feels just like yesterday but time is a thief, folks, and it knows how to fly.
Years pass, life evolves, superman now wears different clothes. He’s rounding out his 32+ year career and he still rushes home and trades his smock for Carharts, t-shirt and boots. He then shifts from one kid’s house to the other, helping them with their many projects that have to be completed. This is only interrupted by the regular car care needed to keep them safe and on the road. He works from daylight to dark being superman and he sets the bar high for future Dads!
He is selfless, unbelievably handy, and incredibly loved! I cherish my role as his wife and biggest cheerleader (because let's face it, once a cheerleader always a cheerleader) I get to see the heart he has under that smock, ball shirt, t-shirt and superman costume and it helps me to strive to be the super-mom in his shadow to our 3 kids and I pray that they too will one day try on a superman costume for size.
Happy Father’s Day to my sweet husband! His identity has NEVER been his career title, being a doctor is just what he does for a living, his greatest title will always be Dad!
Every day I love you,Sunshine!
Cheers! Ang
