Beaumont's Best Candle Care Tips

We take great pride in helping you get the most out of your boutique Beaumont Candle. I want to share some of our best candle care tips with you to ensure that  your candle lasts longer, burns cleaner,  burns safely, and smells stronger.

At Beaumont Candle Co. we make candles with cotton wicks and wooden wicks. We make them in regular candle vessels, home decor vases, pots, and unique ceramic pieces. We also LOVE making candles in antique mason jars, old tins, silver-plate serving pieces, and depression glass. We have wholesale lines for wineries where we put candles in wine bottles. Each vessel has its own unique precautions as far as safety and longevity. When burning a variety of candle types it's even more important to take special care of your candle.

The Trick Is In The Wick

The extending the life of your candle begins before you strike the first match. Properly trimming your candles wick prior to the first burn and after every subsequent burn can dramatically increase the lifetime of your candle. Wood wicks should be trimmed at about 1/8 - 1/2 inch to start while cotton wicks should be trimmed to 1/2 inch.

Sometimes, with the first lighting, the wick may take a little time to get burning. The wax and fragrance oil need to get to the flame to fuel the wick. Sometimes, they light up immediately and sometimes, it may require a relight to get it fueled up.

Once the wax has solidified after each burn, you can trim the wick and it's ready for another burn. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, trim the wick, wood or cotton, before burning your candle! This step is so very important in prolonging  the life of your candle, providing a cleaner burn, and burning safely!!

Your Timing Matters

Always let the candle, regardless of the wick, burn to the edge of the vessel. This prevents tunneling. The candle will create a memory and burn down the center. Once your candle creates a memory of tunneling, you will waste a lot of the candle to the sides. We recommend letting your candle burn only 2 hours at a time. This will prolong the life of the candle.

Size Up The Scent

To help your candle throw the strongest scent you should match the size of the candle you are using to the size room you are burning it in. For example, if you are burning one of our sample-sized candles, use them in a smaller room, such as a bathroom, laundry room, etc…

If you want to have your home or office fragranced more than a couple hours at a time, I suggest using wax melts verses a candle to maintain your fragrance throughout the day. A single Beaumont Melt cube lasts several days! I personally like to always purchase both a candle and melt set for my desired fragrances. By keeping both on hand, I always have the perfect way to showcase the perfect scent for every occasion.

Set Up For A Safe Burn

Always keep burning candles away from children and pets, because an  accident can happen so quickly. Be sure you do not place a candle near a curtain, air vent, books, paper or any soft, uneven surface. Never leave your candle unattended, and pay close attention to your flame.

If the flame gets too long while burning it will use up a lot of wax and fragrance. A large flame can give off extra heat and cause smoke. This can cause your container to over heat. This is especially important to note when using a container not specifically made for a candle such as, antique mason jars, depression glass, and wine bottles. Getting these vessels too hot can cause the glass to break or crack.

Do A Candle Check

Do a “candle check” before leaving your house! This might sound silly or a bit overboard, but I learned this lesson the hard way. 15 - 20 years ago, before I made candles, I was running late to get my kids from school and forgot to blow out a candle. I ran errands for most of the day and was gone for hours. When I returned home, the jar, of a candle I had accidentally left burning, had broken in half, fell over and burned a hole in my rug. I was so very thankful my house didn’t catch on fire! I now do a “candle check” before I leave my home.

I know that safety tips can often sound redundant, however in a busy household, a candle can easily be overlooked or left unattended. Accidents happen, life is busy, but remember it’s a flame. Please be safe and remember a pack of luxury wax melts are always a good alternative for a busy day or a busy home.
